It's not the typical scenario, but proves that sometimes inter-species bonds come easy, especially if one of your pets is young when you introduce them ...

"I am sure I am just lucky, and the occurrences in my studio apartment should have taken much longer. However, my family started with my boyfriend, myself, and a rescued cat named Lexi. It soon expanded to include a puppy (pit bull mix, now 8 months old). Later came 2 kittens (about a month ago) and then I adopted a flemish giant for my 5th grade class pet (I am a new teacher). Long story short, the bunny was accustomed to roaming as he pleased and using a litter box. That is the way it was for him in my class (I have very careful, well behaved students) until administration said he had to be caged. I knew he would be miserable, so I brought him home until I was able to find a new home for him. That was yesterday. As soon as he came home, I opened his kennel (the dog was at day care, only cats were home) and one kitten crawled in and laid beside the bunny and fell asleep. Later they both woke up, and the bunny came out the explore. The other kitten fell in love with him, and the adult cat really just couldn't care less about his presence. She ignores him. I was nervous about bringing the dog home, but it was nothing to be worried about. I came inside (with puppy on leash), and the bunny hopped right over to the puppy. She backed up and laid down. The bunny continued to approach her, and climbed on her and smelled all over. She stood up and sniffed and licked the bunny all over. Although I have not let them alone unsupervised, I am not worried at all. They are like best friends! At this moment the puppy, one kitten and the bunny are all curled up asleep! I am so pleased this is all working out, but still looking forward to a larger place!"

New Guest Poster

We've just gotten word from a reader in Iceland that he and his wife are getting their first cat today. They'll be telling us about their experience introducing the cat to their bunny as our next guest poster.

Friðrik says, "We're a bit nervous, I already have a bunny who is quite nervous already. We just moved to a new place and he has a pretty nervous disposition in general, despite being a sweetheart. We're just married, just moved and now my wife's getting her dream of getting a cat! It's even more complicated though because the poor thing is homeless now, her owners split up and are leaving the country, so he's goign to be very confused going to a new home. Luckily we know him a bit already as our friend has been renting there for a while. He's a rather nervous and eccentric cat too. To be honest, I'm just crossing my fingers this works out well. We've tried to do research, but really, we don't really know what we‘re doing. ;) "

Keep an eye out for their story in coming days, when Gabríel and Sveinn encounter each other for the first time!

Out of Quarantine

Max got to move out of quarantine last night and he is very happy about this. While he is still a very chatty cat (at least compared to Boo and Sly), it's a much happier chatter than the pathetic meows from the bathroom. :)

In order to keep Max's space small, but still allow him to see and smell the household, he is now living in an exercise pen with a lid set up in the middle of the dining room. Sly was quite concerned to find that, not only had the interloper moved, but that he now had one of the "good" litterboxes! After I showed Sly that the other "good" litterbox was also clean, he got over his issue fairly quickly. So far the boys have spent a fair amount of time looking at each other up close and tagging each other through the ex-pen bars.

We were just about to tell Sly to quit taunting Max, when both cats tagged each other and then flopped over "dead". There was a little more "tag you're it" action, but they also spent several minutes trying to out-flop each other.

After the last round of "tag", it was apparently nap time. Each boy retired to his own cube, although Max didn't stay there for long. Apparently he needed to be out of the cube to see what was going on in the house.

Today, while Joanna and Sly took a nap, I let Max out on his harness and lead for the first time. So far, he is pretty sure that the harness is evil and spent about 10 minutes trying to walk backwards out of the harness before he figured out that it would not work. Then he tried flopping and rolling/squirming out of the harness, only to discover that he couldn't escape the harness that way either. After he finally gave up on escaping the harness, we wandered around the house looking at a few things. Max and Tribble did stare at each other briefly while standing about 3 feet apart and Max was clearly interested, but he didn't act predatory at all, simply curious. After about 25 minutes, Max decided it was time to flop on the carpet that sticks out in front of his ex-pen. I groomed him for a few minutes with the Zoom Groom (he's still giving up small kittens in spare fur) and then decided that it was time for Max to go back in his space so I could get some work done.

Later tonight, or possibly tomorrow, we will do the first introduction between Max and the girls. We worried about Sophie and Tribble when they lost Tuxedo as he seemed to be the glue that held them together. There was no such bond between our cats, Boo and Sly, so we weren't nearly as concerned about Sly when Boo died. After a while, we began to wonder if Sly would like to have a cat friend or not. We want to be responsible about possibly getting a cat, and we also need to be cautious on behalf of the bunnies. We found the answer in Animal Humane Society's Mission: Meow. AHS needs foster homes for adult cats during the summer and fall when they are overrun with kittens. We talked with AHS' fostering coordinator for Mission: Meow to find out if we would be able to request a cat who was more likely to be respectful of the rabbits and not see them as prey. Thankfully, AHS was willing to work with us and shortly after that we attended foster home training. This past weekend, we found out that we were getting our foster cat, Max, on Monday.

One of AHS' policies is that the foster cat needs to be kept in quarantine for the first few days in his new foster home. This is partly to allow the cat to get used to the everyday sounds of our home, and partly to make sure that the stress of moving from shelter to foster home did not cause Max to get sick. As I sit here writing this, I find it hard to follow that rule. Joanna and I both know, from years of fostering rabbits, how important quarantine is and we will keep Max separate for at least a few days, but it is really hard listening to the pathetic meows coming from the downstairs bathroom. Joanna and I have each spent some time with Max this evening to begin to get to know him. So far, we have learned that he likes the presence of people, but he's not quite sure that we are worthy of petting him yet. He loves the Zoom Groom and he seems to like toys on a string. He's a very smart cat - he has already figured out how to work the light switches in the bathroom.

Sly has just figured out that there is an interloper in the house and has spent the last minute or two enthusiastically "clawing" the recliner to make sure that we all know that the chair is his (just ignore the fact that he doesn't have front claws). Other than that, and a sudden fascination with the bathroom, Sly seems to be okay with the interloper so far. Hopefully the fact that he is used to foster bunnies coming and going, combined with the fact that Max had been living in the cat colony room and likes other cats, will make the introduction between the boys relatively easy. Now, we just have to figure out if the girls will get along with Max and he with them. Sophie is a diva and might not appreciate the fact that I have already mentioned to a couple of people that "Max looks a lot like Sophie". Tribble will probably be fine, since Joanna just told me that the shelter staff mentioned that Max loves it when other cats groom him. Tribble loves to groom anything with fur, so hopefully Max will decide that a rabbit is an acceptable substitute.

New Guest Poster

Tanya and Joanna lead very busy lives, as they're both leaders in their local rabbit rescue group. They're a bit disbelieving when I tell the story about how Henry the hugely overweight cat met my little 2-lb dwarf bunny Chimi, and turned tail and fled the second she twitched an ear. But really, rabbits have claws and big pointy teeth and attitude, and most of them are about the same size as a cat pound for pound (cats just have more fur) ... they CAN defend themselves, and are often the dominant animal in cat-rabbit pairings, especially if the cat doesn't get outside a lot. Don't believe me? Especially if you already have a vet for your cat or dog, don't just assume your rabbit will be fine seeing him, too. "But my vet SAYS he sees rabbits!" you say? Still, be cautious, and take my story as a warning ...

I spoiled my first bunny Loki like you wouldn't believe. He actually refused to eat veggies, since he was so used to getting crackers as treats almost every day (the equivalent of a Big Mac for a bunny!). He was seriously overweight (okay, obese). Then one day he stopped eating. He droppings were tiny, and he didn't want to come out of his cage at night. Since I didn't have a vet already, I took him to the vet that my brother-in-law used for his cat. I told the vet that he'd lost a LOT of weight, probably half his body weight, and wouldn't eat. She said that it was probably just because he was lonely because I'd been gone for a few weeks for summer school. He died in less than a week, from the most common killer of pet rabbits: GI Stasis.

A rabbit-savvy vet would have recognized the symptoms immediately. But your typical cat or dog vet wouldn't necessarily, because rabbits are "exotics" with a very different metabolism. Be sure the vet you choose specializes in rabbits.

So, how do you find a specialist rabbit vet? Don't wait until you have an emergency; instead, call around to a variety of vets and ask who they refer their clients to for serious rabbit cases. Then, don't just ask if they'll see rabbits since many will say "yes," meaning "yes, I'd like to have your business" rather than "yes, I'm specially trained in rabbit care." Ask the "trick" rabbit questions ...

Ask how many rabbit clients they currently have.

How many rabbits has the vet has spayed/neutered and the success rate (the loss rate should be almost none ... 99.5% is average success rate for specialists).

Does the vet withhold food and water prior to surgery in rabbits? (The right answer is no. Rabbits can't vomit, so there's no risk of that during surgery, and rabbits should never be allowed to have empty digestive tracts because of the risk of GI Stasis.)

Ask if they know which antibiotics are dangerous for rabbits (amoxicillin and most of the "...cillin" drugs like penicillin).

What's the best way to prevent hairballs? (Answer: Provide your rabbit with hay every day, preferably 24 hours a day. Provide daily exercise and brush frequently.)

You might also want to ask which conferences they've attended lately that had talks about rabbit medicine and what journals they read. You want your vet to be up on the latest in rabbit treatment.

You can find these and other questions on the House Rabbit Society's FAQ on finding a good vet and questions to ask before spaying/neutering . The HRS also keeps a recommended vets list that might be helpful, and your local rabbit rescue group likely keeps a similar list.

Finding a rabbit-savvy vet is worth the effort. I drive an hour across the city to get to mine, but I rest easy knowing that my bunnies get the best care possible. After all, paying a vet who doesn't specialize in rabbits is just throwing your money away, and can cost the life of your pet.

On the Importance of Spaying/Neutering

Probably the number one thing you can do to make bonding work is to spay/neuter your rabbit. Why? you ask. Well, for many reasons ...

Unfixed rabbits are sexually aggressive animals. You'll never see two rabbits meet for the first time and start playing together, like dogs in a dog park might. In the best cases they stay warily at opposite sides of their space. At their more typical they lunge at each other, bite, mount, and pull out fur. Watching your beloved Thumper become part of a roiling ball of teeth-gnashing fur with another animal is not fun, believe me.

Fixed rabbits are calmer, less prone to destructive behavior like digging and chewing, they don't spray urine, they're easier to litter train, females have a drastically longer life when the 85% risk of uterine cancer is removed ... and of most interest to us is the fact that they're less aggressive when the urge to mate is removed. That means less hormone-induced biting, lunging, circling, and growling, and so an easier bond weather it be with a rabbit or with another pet like a cat or dog.

Plus, by spaying/neutering you'll be sure not to accidentally contribute to the rabbit overpopulation problem ... remember that rabbits are the third most abandoned pet after cats and dogs.

For more information on the importance of spaying/neutering as it relates to bonding rabbits, visit www.rabbit.org/health/spay.html

And for info on choosing a rabbit-savvy vet, see www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html (I'll be writing more on this topic soon!).

Introducing Prince Mochi

Mochi, a beautiful black Holland Lop, is our original bunny. Affectionately named Prince Mochi, he is diva above all owning a prominent and respectful command of our home. As a young prince, Mochi has claimed everything as his own, including adding intricate designs to my husbands favorite leather jacket. This we give freely for the love he shares and gift that he is. I am a mental health therapist specializing in children experiencing trauma, and Mochi travels to work with me regularly. The children often ask, “Is Mochi here today? No, well I guess I will talk to you anyway.” Mochi has more than earned his keep with the children he has helped and love he shares. So, when I began to feel as if Mochi wanted a friend, we gladly took him to Bunnyluv (a simply fabulous rescue center that is a wealth of bunny health and care information) and bonded him with his choice of partners.

As we discovered the challenges of bonding bunnies, I began to wonder if I was wrong in assuming Mochi wanted a bunny friend. Mochi was difficult to bond, rejecting most four legged friends. However, after months of bonding attempts, Mochi fell in love with Fletcher, a very sweet tempered but slightly skittish Dutch Mix. Mochi and Fletchcr cuddle, kiss and sleep nose to nose. Fletcher’s entrance into our family has provided a new view on bunny personalities. He will sit on your lap for hours and cuddle (yes I know this is odd bunny behavior), and at times be scared of his own shadow. He will thump at himself, freaked out by the click click of his feet on the hardwood floor. He will jump off and on the carpet, thumping at the sound he makes. He is equally unique to Mochi and a perfect fit for our unconventional family.

Finished with the bonding process, our pet family was complete. That was until our contractor and friend, Larry Mullins, walked into the house and asked, “What should I do with this?” He held in his hand a scrawny, dirty and very scared little 5-week-old kitty. He handed the little baby over to my husband, Randy. Randy called me at work and informed me we are absolutely not keeping the kitty. However, by the time I was home, the kitty had been bathed, fed, and was fast asleep in my husbands arms. Randy said, “She thinks I am her mom.” Sure, we were not keeping her….she is now named Ms. Mullina Larray, after our friend who found her. We call her Ms. Mully. And I know absolutely nothing about cats.

So how do you bond a kitty with bunnies anyway? Mochi went through dozens of bunnies to find Fletcher, and now I want him to freely accept another little friend that I have chosen? That the Prince had not given permission to live in the kingdom? And dear Fletcher is scared of his own shadow… stay tuned for future posts as I share the integration of our new little carnivore into our family.

New Guest Poster!

I'm pleased to announce that Cat Meets Bunny will have a new guest poster starting up soon. Symptoms are refusing to eat, weight loss, sluggishness, and very small droppings in their litterbox. This can come on VERY quickly ... just in a manner of a day or two. Rabbits are designed to eat almost all the time, which is why having free access to hay at all times is so important ... that constant eating keeps the GI tract moving. If your rabbit hasn't eaten in a day, seek medical attention from a rabbit-savvy vet immediately!

And remember, rabbits are an "exotic" pet with a very different metabolism than cats or dogs. Be sure the vet you see specializes in rabbits. Don't just ask if they'll see rabbits since many will say yes when they shouldn't. Ask the "trick" rabbit questions ... see the House Rabbit Society's article on this for suggestions.

I lost my first rabbit to GI Stasis, so I try to tell people about it when I can. See Dana Krempels' excellent article on the subject for more info.

Suspicious Behavior

Well, Ive certainly been fooled by the performative antics of these little fuzzies. On three occasions this past week Ive turned around to see Luna and Maria engaging in exceptionally cordial behavior with one another. The first was Luna dozing with her head resting on Maria's cage, with the rabbit nonchalantly napping unperturbed below.
This astonished me as Id yet to witness an interaction between them that hadn't ended with Luna fearfully darting off down the hall, or with Maria stomping her foot and hiding behind a curtain or under a chair. The second time I caught them was after Id been typing away at my homework for an hour only to turn around and discover the two furries facing off on the same article of furniture. Now the rule has generally been that if Maria is out of her cage, then Luna will only allow for herself to be elevated on some sort of surface that provides a safe vantage point on which to intently observe bunny behavior. She is still rather shy and wary of Maria after the few acts of bullying and when Maria attempts to make contact, she wont have it. But here they were sitting side by side! Luna was nervous and the time was limited - but I began to catch on that the interactions they were having in front of me were often for my benefit alone. Those tricksters have been bonding in their own way so long as I keep out of it.
Today was the third and most touching of all interactions I have witnessed. I had let Maria out of the cage for hours while I worked on my homework. She and Luna had been in the same room all day and were often changing positions and watching each other... but had yet to directly interact. When Luna sauntered over to take in some kitty food, Maria followed and helped herself to Luna's water dish. So there they were, side by side, like old friends meeting for lunch. I'm very pleased with the progress.
It will still take time for them to establish their level of comfort and trust with each other, but they are certainly interested and relating on some level. My intention was to find a friend to keep Luna active, and this young bunny is definitely providing more than merely a point of interest for her.

Maria Meets Luna

So here is how Maria ended up coming home with me.
I had been planning to donate my cage and bunny care items for awhile, and so when the SPCA put out a notice for a holiday "toy drive", I gathered up Peter's belongings and headed over. As soon as I entered the small animal section I knew I was in trouble. I was feeling pretty vulnerable to begin with and it took no time at all for Maria to soften me up. I petted her lovely face for a little while and she licked my hand in response. I befriended the woman who was caring for the bunnies and returned several times over the next couple of weeks. I hadn't planned on getting another rabbit, but the more I thought about Luna and her quiet solitude, the more I was convinced that we needed to renew our little family. And Maria was so sweet!

I did some research into rabbit introductions and I followed some good advice from the shelter staff. I set up the cage and items in the apartment before I brought Maria home in order to get Luna used to the presence again. She took to it immediately! She was purring and rustling around in the bedding, and I was certain at this point that she was very interested in having a bunny again! What I did for Maria, was simply to visit and pet her, and have her familiar with myself and my scent.

The evening I brought her into the apartment, I placed the carry cage on the floor and gave her some time to acclimate to her surroundings. Eventually Luna caught on that she was there and sniffed through the cage, all the while purring and rubbing herself against it. She was so excited!
Her reaction was so positive that I admit I got a bit ahead of myself. Maria was just very quiet, frightened by all the excitement I'm sure. I put her into her cage and praised both of them. She was a bit standoffish and gave a few thumps but it didn't take her long to get comfortable.
The moment I allowed the two animals to meet face to face, Luna kissed her brown nose and Maria responded with a rabbit punch in the face!

Oh no! I was crushed! It was like watching your child be bullied on the playground!
My poor lonely kitty!
So my expectations were obviously too high to start. The cat ran off to hide and Maria began to make herself at home.
Shes been here almost two weeks and she is happily bouncing and exploring and receiving love and attention from humans, but she is setting clear boundaries with kitty. She is the dominant of the two and my submissive little cat slinks around watching her explore...and backing off quickly when Maria comes near. They are fine in the same room together but Luna likes to be up high and out of reach. When Maria is in her cage, Luna will come up and sniff her. I believe they will be friends but it is a new relationship and they are taking it slow!

Maria seems to have accepted Luna and at this point I actually think that she is the one who would like to be close to the cat - but now Luna is nervous of her antics.

The most successful trick Ive used so far is to give them treats side by side. It seems that food overrides any other concerns, and they happily gobble up whatever I give them and at a very close proximity. Afterwards there is usually a little sniff of one another and then retreat.

All in all, things are improving and developing daily!

More to come!

a little history

So I'd like to start off with a little history of how Luna came to be my cat and how she came to love bunnies. This emerging rabbit relationship isn't her first, nor is it mine, but it is new all the same.
Almost nine years ago I moved into my first apartment and was given as an unusual gift - a second hand pet rabbit who I named Peter. He was a mischievous little grey dwarf rabbit and I had no idea what to do with him. We grew to understand each other rather quickly, I gave him free run of the apartment and he obliged by my litter box regulations. He chewed my stuff but I didn't mind much, and he occasionally gave me some snuggle time in return for hay and cilantro. The day I came across a "free kitten" sign next to a picture of a most
ridiculous little Siamese,
I knew I had experienced love at first sight. Luna came home with me as a tiny little furball who was afraid of nothing, including big bunnies. Peter immediately fell for her and she paid him no mind as he followed her around and made her his world. They grew up this way, well, ok- we all grew up this way - wrestling, grooming, comforting; a hilarious and remarkable comedy of inter species bonding. No preconceptions between them, no jealousy,
no arguments - simply a playful partnership. Even though Luna physically outgrew him she always remained the little one in the relationship. They spent the better part of eight years together this way, and as Pete grew old Luna remained dutifully by his side - even in the last week of his life this past October, she kept close beside him- a seemingly intuitive and unspoken language between them.

Together Luna and I have missed our Pete terribly. I fully intended to wait to consider a new addition... but our little family was lacking, and I would like to share the beginnings of how Maria has wriggled her way into our life.

Our First Chronicle

We've found our first guest poster for Cat Meets Bunny! Amy wanted to help other people who were trying to bond dogs and rabbits, so I created a website where she could chronicle the process ... dogmeetsbunny.blogspot.com. As the story progressed, we got a lot of comments from people who really appreciated seeing a first-hand narrative of Amy's experience ... a kind of diary of her individual experience.

Now that Amy has finished bonding her pets, we're starting up a new story there in the next few weeks with a different poster. But I want to see it grow even more! This is where I'm hoping you'll come in. This new website is for cat and bunny bonds, and expands from where Dog Meets Bunny left off. We're looking for someone who recently adopted a rabbit into a cat family (or vice versa), who has some solid bunny knowledge, and who is moderately computer savvy. We want you to be our first "guest poster." All you'd need to do is write up summaries of what you're doing and how things work out each time you introduce them. Amy actually had a lot of fun doing it, and it can be really rewarding.

If you're interested in being a part of the Cat Meets Bunny project, or if you're considering bringing a new bunny into your dog household and would like to be considered for Dog Meets Bunny's next opening, please email me and tell me a little bit about yourself.
